Patrick Schulkers

Men’s Assistant Coach

Patrick Schulkers is in his seventh season as an assistant coach for the Cal men’s rowing team, joining the program in 2011. During his time in Berkeley, Schulkers has overseen recruiting and served as the freshman coach, identifying and enrolling talent from across the world. Under his instruction, the Bears rowed to a national championship in the third varsity eight at the 2014 Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) National Championships, while also guiding the freshman eight and varsity four to Pac-12 titles.

Beyond coaching, Schulkers has served as the Development and Financial Director of the Friends of Cal Crew and California Rowing Club since 2013, leading the day-to-day operations and fundraising activities for two major non-profit orQganizations.

In addition to his success at Cal, Schulkers has also found success on the international stage, serving as head coach of the US National Team Under-23 Men’s Pair and an assistant for the US National Team Under-23 Women’s Quad. Under his direction, the men’s pair finished eighth at the 2014 Under-23 World Championships, while the women’s quad took fifth. Schulkers has also coached crews to numerous victories at the Henley Royal Regatta and Royal Canadian Henley Regattas.

Prior to his arrival in Berkeley, Schulkers spent three years as the head coach of the novice boys for the Marin Rowing Association, culminating in a Youth National Championship for the Boys’ Lightweight eight in 2011.

Schulkers began his coaching career at the University of Cincinnati, spending three years as head coach from 2002 to 2005. During his tenure, Schulkers helped rebuild the program and led the Bearcats back to the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Association (ECAC) Invitational Regatta after a six-year absence.

Schulkers attended The Ohio State University, graduating with a Bachelor’s of Science in Industrial and Systems Engineering. During his time in Columbus, Schulkers fell in love with the sport of rowing, serving as an oarsman and president of the Ohio State Crew Club. Schulkers competed in the Buckeyes’ Varsity eight at the Head of the Charles, ECAC, and IRA Championships.
